Concourse B and Tunnel is a 700,000-square-foot facility and its part in the expansion program consists of the concourse, an underground pedestrian tunnel, aircraft apron and supporting infrastructure. It marks the largest gate capacity increase since AUS first opened to travelers in 1999.
The concourse site overlaps existing taxiways, which will be relocated farther south. This necessitates the construction of two aircraft bridges over Emma Browning Avenue that are both capable of supporting planes as large as the Boeing 777-300.
New Arrivals and Departure Hall
The New Arrivals and Departure Hall will be the new face of the airport with more than 600,000-square-foot extension of the Barbara Jordan Terminal. This addition will push the terminal north onto the existing Red Garage footprint that will be removed. The project will include curbside pick-up and drop-off with efficient connections to the garages and rent-a-car facilities. The facility will feature airline check-in counters, a consolidated security area, domestic baggage claim, and fully renovated retail and dining options.
Austin has experienced remarkable population and business growth in the past decades, and that growth has generated the need for airport development and a pressing demand for capacity expansion at AUS. With the Austin metro area projected to more than double in size by 2060 to 5.2 million people, this modernization program will support anticipated needs for Austin’s promising future.
