Helping Increase the Road Network in Australia

Recognized as a project of national importance by the Australian Government, the Hunter Expressway project represents an investment of $1.7 billion, the largest single road investment in New South Wales history.

The project includes the construction of a new 25-mile (40-kilometer) dual carriageway connecting the F3 Freeway to the New England Highway west of Branxton.

NSW Roads and Maritime Services, Thiess, WSP and Hyder Consulting formed the Hunter Expressway Alliance, to design and build the 8-mile (13-kilometer) eastern section of the Hunter Expressway from the Newcastle interchange on the F3 Freeway.

Reduced Driving Times

This new section includes interchanges located at the F3 Freeway and Buchanan, 920 yards (840 meters) of viaduct including three bridges, bridges at many locations and treatment of extensive disused underground mine workings.

We provided environmental management as well as investigation, design and construction-phase services. Design activities and preparation of pre-approval documents were part of our environmental management responsibilities.

The four-lane expressway, inaugurated on March 22, 2014, reduces driving times between Newcastle and Branxton by 30 minutes and lightens traffic load by removing up to 30,000 vehicles a day from the Highway.
