The investments delivered under the programme not only had a technical dimension, but a strategic dimension as well. They constituted an important step in Schneider Electric’s efforts to reduce operational emissions and create more sustainable and energy-efficient manufacturing facilities.
The decarbonization projects delivered across Schneider Electric’s existing industrial facilities required balancing ambitious CO₂ reduction targets with local technical, regulatory and economic constraints.
One of the key challenges involved adapting the energy transition strategy to existing regulations and infrastructure limitations, particularly insufficient grid connection capacity. In response, WSP designed phased modernization solutions, including grid connection upgrades, new transformer and electrical substations, and heat pump-based heating systems, enabling the gradual electrification of the facilities.
Optimizing investment expenditure was also a critical consideration. For each facility, multiple solution scenarios were developed together with CAPEX, OPEX and payback analyses, enabling the selection of options that balanced energy performance objectives with economic considerations.
An additional challenge was the integration of new technologies into existing facilities with varying technical conditions, incomplete as-built documentation and the need to adapt solutions to operational systems already in place. The decarbonization programme developed by WSP was also coordinated with subcontractors and aligned with other projects planned for implementation at the respective sites.
The engineering solutions were developed with flexibility in mind, allowing for different equipment layouts, integration of heat recovery systems and the implementation of acoustic mitigation measures, which is particularly important at locations where equipment was to be installed outside existing buildings.
Our work with Schneider Electric demonstrates how a structured industrial decarbonization strategy that combines vision with technical expertise can help facilities reduce energy consumption and emissions while supporting a long-term commitment to sustainability. Through the consistent implementation of its environmental objectives, Schneider Electric—with the support of partners such as WSP—has undertaken a broad programme of energy assessments, engineering design and facility upgrades to support its long-term decarbonization goals. The project demonstrates how industrial organizations can evaluate and implement lower-carbon solutions while addressing site-specific technical, regulatory and economic considerations.
