“The start of tunnel boring is the culmination of more than a decade of planning, engineering and collaboration,” said Drew Bazil, senior vice president and project manager at WSP in the U.S. “We congratulate the Gateway Development Commission, Amtrak, NJ TRANSIT and the many project partners who helped reach this point. WSP is proud to contribute its tunneling, geotechnical and infrastructure expertise as this important connection advances.”
The Hudson Tunnel Project is designed to improve operational flexibility, enhance system resilience and reduce the corridor’s vulnerability to disruptions associated with aging infrastructure, severe weather and other potential hazards. As tunnel excavation progresses, the project will advance its goal of enabling expanded rail capacity and redundancy between New Jersey and New York City.
For more than 15 years, WSP has worked alongside project partners to advance planning, environmental studies, engineering design and construction support services for the initiative. WSP continues to deliver complex geotechnical, tunneling, civil and multidisciplinary engineering solutions across multiple active construction packages. Their work supports major transportation infrastructure programs in the U.S. and helps shape the future of rail travel along the Northeast Corridor.
