Climate change presents one of the most pressing challenges in human history. Impacts of climate change are observed globally across different sectors crucial to society and the economy — such as human health, water, energy and food security, infrastructure, and others — and are expected to become increasingly complex and disruptive.
As a leading global professional services, engineering, environmental and sustainability consulting firm, we are committed to accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy and driving sustainable growth. This starts with evaluating and managing our own greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Our targets
In 2021, WSP announced ambitious climate action through a commitment to achieve net zero emissions across our value chain by 2040, supported by science-based GHG emissions reduction targets. Our science-based targets (SBTs) have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
- Reduce scope 1 and scope 2 (market-based) GHG emissions 60% by 2030 from a 2018 base year
- Reduce upstream scope 3 emissions 30% by 2030 from a 2018 base year
- Source 100% renewable electricity by 2030
- Achieve net zero emissions across our value chain by 2040
- Commit to better understand GHG emissions associated with our designs and advice and collaborate with our clients and partners to drive emissions reductions
Collectively working towards a low-carbon future
Recognizing that our suppliers have a profound impact on our ability to achieve our targets, we foster collaborative relationships and set clear expectations for ESG compliance throughout our supply chain.
For example, WSP’s key global suppliers are requested to:
- Disclose scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data.
- Provide independent or third-party assurance of disclosed emissions.
- Adopt an SBTi-approved science-based emissions reductions target.
- Commit to a 100% renewable electricity target by 2030.
To ensure we are clearly communicating our climate action commitments to our suppliers, and garnering their support, we have made the following resources available:
