Even though the scope of this project was a single tree, I never imagined I’d be part of something so big in terms of its significance. Especially now, when we are so focused on sustainability and reducing our carbon emissions, this tree is a testament of nature’s endurance and an extraordinary example of structural engineering in its own right.

All the way through the design stages I thought the structure of the props was too “flimsy”. It pleased me having to eat my words on the day they were delivered. As soon as they were installed, I knew we had it right. My ambition was to develop a structural solution to support the Allerton Oak for years to come, but I also hope the “Liverpool Solution” can be built on to produce a national industry standard for similar projects.

Using the point loading software blew the walls out of anything we had done in the tree industry before and identified the need to use outrigger props as well as the main structural supports. Exploring the challenge together from both an engineering and arboricultural perspective is what made this project so interesting, and we’ll definitely look at future projects from this angle.

What makes the “Liverpool Solution” stand out

icn-future-ready

Future proof

Simple and elegant design that can be adjusted as the tree grows and moves.

  • Galvanized steel props include cradles with adjustable “jaws” so they can be easily adjusted and moved, extending their life indefinitely.

icn-wmap-net-zero

Inspired by nature

Design solution supports the tree’s structural integrity enabling an ongoing tree healthcare program to improve its health and vitality.

  • Outrigger props and main structural supports withstand the stresses and forces impacting the tree.

icn-wmap-community

A unique collaboration

Prop solution combines structural engineering and arboricultural expertise to work with tree’s unique form and behavior, rather than against it.

  • Analysis software used to model the tree, design the solution and test scenarios, including the impact of climate change.
