Tell us a little about yourself and your role at WSP.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. After completing secondary school, I pursued a Higher Diploma in Building Services Engineering at HKIVE before moving to the UK to complete my Bachelor's degree.

I am currently an Assistant Electrical Engineer within WSP's Building Services team. In my role, I support senior engineers across a diverse range of projects and have had the opportunity to contribute to multiple stages of project delivery, including surveys, design development, project coordination, and testing and commissioning. Being exposed to the full project lifecycle has been both exciting and invaluable for my professional growth.

As a graduate engineer, there are many aspects of the industry that simply cannot be taught in a classroom. Having a supportive team that is willing to share knowledge and guidance has made my transition from university to professional practice both smooth and rewarding.

What skills or experiences have you gained since joining WSP?

Joining WSP has given me a new perspective on how engineering principles are applied in the real world. At university, technical skills are developed through assignments and projects; at WSP, those skills contribute to projects that have a tangible impact on people's daily lives. I've gained a greater appreciation for professionalism, safety, quality, and effective communication. Working with multidisciplinary teams has also strengthened my collaboration skills. Every challenge presents an opportunity to learn, and each project helps me grow both technically and professionally.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team and colleagues?

What I enjoy most is the opportunity to solve problems and learn from experienced professionals. Every project brings unique challenges, and it is rewarding to work together to develop practical solutions. As an Assistant Engineer, I can observe how senior colleagues apply their technical expertise while also contributing to project delivery myself. What stands out most is the supportive team culture. Everyone is approachable and willing to share their knowledge, creating an environment where continuous learning and professional growth are encouraged.

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at WSP.

I am an Assistant Engineer with the Healthcare Services team under the Property & Buildings division. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and recently completed a Master's degree in Building Services Engineering. WSP marks the first stage of my engineering career, and I consider it a privilege to have begun with the Healthcare team, where our work has a direct impact on the community by contributing to hospitals that are safe, comfortable, reliable and sustainable.

What has been the highlight of your journey at WSP so far?

Having been with WSP for approximately one month, I have already encountered a number of new challenges. The most memorable was my first experience of liaising with an external party and attending a meeting independently. Although I was somewhat apprehensive at the outset, the experience proved to be highly valuable and has given me greater confidence in a professional setting.

What skills or experiences have you gained since joining WSP?

I have taken part in a site visit for a non-FSI dangerous goods (DG) inspection, which allowed me to gain an understanding of the inspection procedures and to observe the installations on site. I find that there is something new to learn almost every day. One important lesson is that healthcare projects call for an additional level of care, as the systems we design ultimately support patients' lives. Although my background lies in electrical engineering, I have come to appreciate that an understanding of the other building services disciplines is equally important, given that system integration must be considered throughout the design process. In my view, this is a fundamental aspect of being a professional building services engineer.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team and colleagues?

My colleagues and supervisors possess a strong technical background and communicate in a clear and professional manner, both in a work context and in day-to-day interactions. The team is also highly supportive, with members readily assisting one another. Whenever I encounter a matter outside my own discipline, I can seek guidance, and my colleagues are consistently patient in providing an explanation.

What would you say to someone who is considering starting their career at WSP?

For anyone interested in pursuing a career with an engineering consultancy, WSP is an excellent place to begin. WSP undertakes a range of specialised projects, including hospitals and data centres, which carry requirements that are not commonly encountered elsewhere. Working on such projects offers greater opportunities to learn and build up specialised experience that is not easily obtained.

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at WSP.

I graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and currently work as an Assistant Engineer in WSP's Building Structures team. In my role, I am involved in developing structural models using ETABS and other engineering software to analyse structural behaviour and stability. By assessing different design options, I help optimise structural solutions while balancing safety, cost-effectiveness, and project delivery requirements. Working in a consultancy environment has given me the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

What has been the highlight of your journey at WSP so far?

One of the highlights of my journey at WSP has been contributing to the development of the structural model for a building project located at Ma Sik Road. Being involved in building the entire analytical model was both challenging and rewarding, as it allowed me to apply my technical knowledge to a real-world project. Seeing the design progress from concept through analysis and coordination with other disciplines gave me a strong sense of achievement and helped me grow as a structural engineer.

What skills or experiences have you gained since joining WSP?

Since joining WSP, I have developed a wide range of technical skills in structural modelling, analysis, and design. Through various projects, I have gained hands-on experience using industry-standard software and interpreting structural behaviour under different loading conditions. In addition to technical knowledge, I have learned about project workflows, coordination processes, and the administrative requirements involved in the construction industry, particularly in relation to submissions and compliance with the Buildings Department. Most importantly, my experience at WSP has strengthened my understanding of the responsibilities of an engineer and further fuelled my passion for the profession.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team and colleagues?

What I enjoy most about working with my team is the collaborative environment. Whenever challenges arise, my colleagues are always willing to share their knowledge and discuss different approaches to solving problems. I appreciate the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from experienced engineers, and work together towards practical and effective solutions. This supportive culture makes every project both enjoyable and rewarding.

Tell us a little about yourself and your role at WSP.

This year marks five years of my journey as a structural design engineer with WSP. I started my career working on drainage design for the Thomson-East Coast Line depot, while contributing to the cut-and-cover tunnel design for a new Cross Island Line station.

What has been the highlight of your journey at WSP so far?

One of the highlights of my journey has been the opportunity to work across a diverse range of structures, from underground structures such as drainage and cut-and-cover tunnel designs to superstructures such as a bridge at Tengah Depot, steel structures including High Covered Linkways, and Addition and Alteration works such as slab repairs for a pump house.

What skills or experiences have you gained since joining WSP?

These early experiences gave me a strong foundation and the confidence to take on increasingly complex drainage and cut-and-cover tunnel designs in subsequent projects. I have also broadened my technical exposure through different types of structural design work.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team and colleagues?

My role has given me the opportunity to collaborate closely with engineers from different disciplines, including geotechnical and civil engineers, as well as drafters, bringing together their inputs to deliver our designs. I am grateful to have worked with approachable colleagues and QPs who have generously shared their experience and knowledge with me.

What would you say to someone who is considering starting their career at WSP?

My advice would be to stay curious and make the most of every project given. Building a strong understanding of each type of design you encounter, while continuously seeking opportunities to broaden your experience, will help you develop a strong foundation for your career.
