To be completed in four phases, this 152-mile (244-kilometer) mass transit system will bring a much-needed sustainable and viable means of transportation to India's Delhi residents. As part of an international consortium of consultants, WSP began providing general engineering consulting services to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in 1998. Phase I of the system was completed in November 2006, and it consists of three lines with a total length of 40 miles (65 kilometers) and 59 stations—incorporating underground, at-grade, and elevated sections. WSP completed its services for Phase II in 2010, which added an additional 75 miles (121 kilometers) and 81 stations to the Delhi Metro Network, including a 12-mile (19-kilometer) Airport Express Line.
WSP was responsible for the design, specifications, tendering, and construction phase support services for the following rail system elements:
- Rolling stock procurement services
- Automatic train control system
- Signaling system
- Environmental control system design checking including tunnel and underground station ventilation systems
- Systems assurance
- Depot equipment specifications
- Quality assurance
