Chinese medicine is an integral part of Hong Kong's healthcare system that has long been trusted by the locals. As the government is committed to its development with an “evidence-based” approach, The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong is planned with a clear vision in mind – as a flagship institution leading the development in this field.

Equipped with 400 beds, the hospital will deliver high-quality Chinese medicine services while advancing research, education, and international collaboration, with modes of delivery including inpatient, day-patient, outpatient and community outreach services.

WSP supports the vision of this key institution, as our Visioneers served as the building services designer for this project, covering the design of all building services systems as well as the medical gas and pneumatic tube installations, with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind.

Tradition meets innovation

As Hong Kong’s first purpose-built smart hospital dedicated to Chinese medicine, it uniquely integrates traditional medical practices with cutting-edge building technology. For example, our team has designed specialised systems to mitigate odor and heat from moxibustion and decoction therapies.

A local exhaust ventilation system equipped with the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) nano filter is provided in the aims to maintain the air quality inside the moxibustion rooms. The application of photocatalytic oxidation technology on the filter exhibits the capability to make use of the photocatalytic activity for removal of organic pollutants and destruction of bacteria and viruses.

Moreover, while the air of the moxibustion room will be fully exhausted to the outdoor without circulation during treatment, the conditions of the room will also be adjusted to slightly negative pressure to suppress smell spillage to adjacent areas.

Trailblazing modern methods of construction

The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong is China’s first multi-storey permanent hospital built adopting modular integrated construction (MiC) method and multi-trade mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MiMEP) method. Leveraging our technical expertise, the project has established a new industry benchmark in Hong Kong, with MiC adoption accounts for over 20% of total construction floor area, while MiMEP adoption exceeds 80% of total construction floor area.

This integrated approach has significantly enhanced construction quality, ensured project certainty, and reduced site complications. It has also improved safety by minimising on-site labour requirements and enabling seamless integration with structural and architectural features.

Holistic Future Ready systems

WSP’s Future Ready initiatives are embedding through our holistic energy strategy targeting BEAM Plus Platinum rating. Key decarbonisation features include the application of solar hot water system; photovoltaic and BIPV systems; 100% EV charging provisions for private cars, motorcycles and light goods vehicles; solar tube lighting system; smart toilets with occupation status indication panels and ammonia odour sensor, as well as rainwater harvesting system for irrigation.

We also applied IoT to the lighting control system for the auditorium and atrium lightings. The smart, connected system can programme the lighting on-off strategy over a day so as to minimise the manpower for manual control. This subsequently can assist on enhancing the lighting system usage optimisation over these areas.

The use of central control and monitoring systems (CCMS) also ensures that the client benefits from optimised operational costs throughout the building's lifecycle.
