From WSP intern to alternative delivery senior vice president, Becky Fly has worked on some of the largest infrastructure design-build projects in Texas and the southwest. Her drive for reconnecting communities, coupled with technical expertise and ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, enables momentum on her projects from concept to completion.

It’s all in the family for Becky Fly at WSP. Both her brother, a roadway design lead, and her sister-in-law, a civil project manager, have also worked at WSP for decades. Becky began her career at WSP as an intern 25 years ago and worked her way up the ranks to senior vice president to now lead the I-35 Capital Express Central project in Austin for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

Becky’s approach to integrated project delivery, problem solving, risk management and stakeholder engagement leads to the success of mega-projects in Texas. She uses her design-build experience to think like a general contractor to optimize designs for cost, safety and constructability.

What inspires or motivates you in your career? Why do you enjoy working at WSP?

What drives me and what I love most about my job is the team I get to work with daily. I am super spoiled to work with the Texas team and everyone tied to big infrastructure projects across the west. We are in this together. All jobs are fun, but it is more fun when you’re working with your friends and family, you know? And its even better because we can pull off these insanely large and complicated projects together.

The selfish part is that these are really cool and challenging projects here in Texas. Over the past 12 years, I have worked on six large highway infrastructure projects on both the owner’s side and contractor’s side. I know how important it is to agencies, stakeholders and the community to deliver these large projects quickly. These projects have tremendous benefits to keep people and goods safely moving on our roadways to connect Texans for growth.

What are some impactful projects you have been a part of?

From a personal perspective, having the opportunity to become the design manager from deputy on the $798 million Dallas Horseshoe design-build project was an impactful moment and project in my career. Even though I thought I wanted to just be a roadway kid and hangout with my roadway friends, WSP and the team were great about giving me the intense and unique learning experience to grow. The transition into the design lead position forced me to understand how to keep contractor relationships moving forward and to be the voice of decisions when people needed them.

On that project, I received the WSP project manager of the year award in the large project category. I was able to take my brother and sister-in-law as my guests to New York City for the awards ceremony.

WSP creates Future Ready® solutions that deliver lasting value in Texas now, and tomorrow. What are some solutions you are most passionate about?

The infrastructure and resilience work that we do now to reconnect communities is remarkable to me. When I first started in the industry, you just did not anticipate “reconnecting communities” as part of project scope. There were always stakeholders, community members and the public along corridors to address, but now we aim to make these projects positively impact the community. It is just a different and better mindset.

At the end of the day, we are still designing roadways, bridges and sidewalks, but it is exciting to think about how people will use and experience these public spaces. Recent projects like the Dallas I-30 Canyon reconstruction, the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center expansion, Southern Gateway design-build reconstruction and Austin I-35 Capital Express Central project literally connect neighborhoods and people together. The five-acre Southern Gateway Park will reconnect the historic Oak Cliff in Dallas, constructed directly above I-35.

When you think about it, highway infrastructure investment attracts and fuels commerce, enabling the growth we need for the future across all markets. Along highways, you will see storefronts, warehouses and factories, including a huge Tesla plant in Austin. There’s a reason I enjoy working in Texas. In Texas, we can pull off some really complex things.
