DENVER — Anne Williamson, vice president of corporate sustainability and environment at WSP USA, a leading engineering, environment and professional services consultancy, was recently named a Fellow of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME).
This highly prestigious award honors SME members who have made outstanding contributions to the mining profession.
“Being named a Fellow within this prestigious group is the highlight of my career,” said Williamson, who has served on SME’s board of directors and in a variety of additional roles. “SME is the world's leading professional association for mining, which serves a critical role in providing the building blocks of society and is essential to developing clean energy and resilient infrastructure. I'm honored to be part of this industry and deeply appreciate this award.”
With a career that spans from boots-on-the-ground greenfield exploration to executive leadership, Williamson’s list of professional accomplishments is long. She has created programs in environment, sustainability and enterprise risk management and facilitated a culture of responsible stewardship within multiple organizations. Additionally, Williamson has created relationships of trust and respect with communities, indigenous groups, labor organizations and regulatory agencies.
She was a member of Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development — forerunner to the International Council on Mining and Metals. She also has contributed to regulatory development in multiple jurisdictions. Among other notable achievements, Williamson has served on the board of directors and as vice president of the MiningMinnesota trade association.
Since 1986, the SME College of Fellows has honored members who have made exceptional contributions to the organization. Recognition can only be earned through 20 or more years of dedication and service. In 2023, Williamson is marking her 40th year of membership, which includes chairing and participating in SME strategic committees, including Government and Public Affairs; serving on the executive committee; and chairing both the environmental division and the 2018 annual program. She also chaired and presented at many technical sessions.
Williamson began her service to SME as chair of the organization's Morenci Section covering southeastern Arizona. She was selected as a member of the inaugural class of Young Leaders and earned the organization’s Environmental Division Distinguished Service award.
SME brings together more than 13,000 top mining and mineral professionals, spanning 100 countries around the world. Members include engineers, geologists, metallurgists, educators, students and researchers.
