NEW YORK — In observance of World Habitat Day today, employees with WSP, a leading engineering, environment and professional services firm, recently volunteered in force nationwide to participate in the firm’s annual Habitat for Humanity Build Day.
Approximately 600 WSP employees, partner firms, along with their families and several clients, organized into teams for 30 planned builds across the country, doubling the number of projects that WSP volunteers organized last year. Teams built homes, and in some cases playhouses, across 22 states. Builds have been rescheduled in Nashville and Atlanta, due to Hurricane Helene.
“Our work with Habitat for Humanity is a continuation of our focus for more than a century of helping communities achieve their greatest potential for health and safety, connectivity, prosperity, equity and resilience,” said Chris Peters, chief operating officer at WSP, who participated in the St. Louis build.
WSP’s relationship with Habitat for Humanity began with a community project in Seattle in 2019, under the coordination of the firm's Developing Professionals Network (DPN). The DPN consists of emerging professionals from all offices across WSP with a shared mission of advancing the business and firm’s culture.
“The DPN developed this Habitat for Humanity initiative to improve our firm’s connection to communities where we live and work,” Peters said. “It’s our honor and pleasure to help improve quality of life for those who need our help.”
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization that works in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S., Puerto Rico and in more than 70 countries. Since 1976, Habitat has helped more than 59 million people build or improve the place they call home. In the 2023 fiscal year alone, Habitat helped more than 13.4 million people build or improve their homes, and through training and advocacy, more than 9.5 million additional people more gained the potential to improve their housing conditions.
