REDMOND, WASHINGTON — The arrival of light rail service to the City of Redmond’s robust town center was heralded on May 10 at a public grand opening of the Sound Transit Link 2 Line extension.
Sound Transit’s 3.4-mile Downtown Redmond Link Extension includes two new southeast Redmond stations, at Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond, lengthening the 2 Line that previously ended at Redmond Technology Center. Two-car trains run along the new 2 Line extension every 10 minutes, 16 hours a day.
The first segment of Sound Transit’s 2 Line, which connects Redmond Technology Station to South Bellevue Station, opened on April 27, 2024. The 2 Line now serves 10 stations between South Bellevue and Downtown Redmond.
The 2 Line is the eastern extension of Sound Transit’s Link light rail system. When the final two-station segment of the east-west alignment, which crosses Lake Washington and serves stations at Mercer Island and Judkins Park, opens, it will connect with the north-south 1 Line at the International District/Chinatown Station in downtown Seattle.
WSP, one of the world’s leading professional services firms, served as the owner’s representative, as well as program manager for the design-build project.
“We are honored to have contributed to this momentous achievement by Sound Transit,” said Jill Marilley, senior vice president and Pacific Northwest area manager for WSP in the U.S. Marilley serves as the project manager. “Thanks to this extension, trips from Marymoor Village Station to downtown Bellevue will only take 15 minutes and we will see a whole new world of opportunities emerging for commuters throughout the Puget Sound region.”
Sound Transit projects ridership on the 2 Line to reach 43,000-52,000 daily riders by 2026.
Marymoor Village Station was constructed on a 3.5-acre site near Marymoor Park and includes a new 1,400-space parking garage to accommodate commuters and reduce traffic on roadways.
Downtown Redmond Station is located along 166th Avenue Northeast near parks, housing and retail locations in the town center. It provides easy access to the Sammamish Slough walking and biking trail and is the final stop of the 2 Line.
The milestone celebration included a speaking program and ribbon cutting at Downtown Redmond Station, with service on the new extension beginning shortly afterward. Additional events were hosted by community partners at the Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond stations, and by the City of Redmond at other local locations. WSP was a co-sponsor of the opening event.
Over the past two decades WSP has provided engineering services to Sound Transit for multiple expansion and improvement projects to connect the Puget Sound region of Washington, including the Central Link and Tacoma Link segments, Angle Lake/Airport Link, Northgate Link Extension and the 7.8-mile South Link extension from Angle Lake to Federal Way, which is currently under construction.
