DEERFIELD BEACH, FLORIDA — Preliminary design is underway for the I-95/SW 10th Street Connector Interchange, a complex infrastructure project that will significantly reduce travel times by separating local and highway traffic between Sawgrass Expressway/Florida’s Turnpike and Interstate 95 (I-95) in Broward County.
As designer, WSP, one of the world’s leading professional services firms, is responsible for roadway, structural, lighting and drainage design. The firm is collaborating as a joint venture with Prince Contracting LLC, part of the FlatironDragados group within the global ACS Group; and OHLA USA.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project is a phased design-build initiative aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency of the SW 10th Street and I-95 corridors to deliver congestion relief by improving accessibility, mobility and travel times. The project includes highway reconstruction, interchange reconfiguration and deployment of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and connected vehicle (CV) infrastructure for traffic management.
“A key project objective is to separate local traffic from highway traffic and return local roads to residents,” said Yamila Hernandez, PE, senior vice president for project management at WSP in the U.S. She serves as project manager. “This will greatly improve mobility in that area and maintain the integrity of local roads.”
With the new design, the SW 10th Street connector lanes will provide a direct link between the Sawgrass Expressway and I-95, while SW 10th Street will become a “complete street” that will incorporate a shared-use path and provide connectivity to local properties and the local roadway network.
“We’re confident that routing non-local traffic onto dedicated connector lanes will help reduce travel time at peak hours by up to eight minutes for local traffic and as much as 14 minutes for highway traffic over current times,” Hernandez said. “That’s meaningful when you are trying to pick up your child at daycare or get to an appointment on time.”
The project will add capacity and regional connectivity and provide an additional northbound (NB) and southbound (SB) express lane to complete the four-lane 95 Express Phase 3 corridor from north of Sample Road to the Hillsboro Canal. It includes reconfiguring the I-95/SW 10th Street Interchange with direct connection ramps from NB and SB I-95 Express and general purpose lanes to the SW 10th Street Connector to and from the west; ramp and terminal intersection improvements for the I-95/Hillsboro Boulevard interchange; and replacement of the I-95 bridges over Hillsboro Boulevard and the NW 48th Street bridge over I-95.
The project also includes deployment of permanent arterial ITS and CV infrastructure along U.S. 1, Dixie Highway, Powerline Road, U.S. 441, Hillsboro Boulevard and Sample Road to be used as a smart work zone system during construction of the SW 10th Street Connector and I-95 improvements. After the planning phase is completed later this year, the preconstruction phase is scheduled to follow, with construction completion expected by 2032.
