BOISE, IDAHO — A new memorandum of understanding (MOU) between POWER Engineers, Inc., Member of WSP (POWER); and Power Grid Corporation (POWERGRID), will provide greater access in the U.S. to the most extensive network of experts in 765 kilovolt (kV) technology, from design to construction and operation, enabling the reliable and sustainable transfer of large amounts of electricity across vast distances while minimizing energy losses.
At the forefront of this 765 kV technology, POWERGRID is one of the largest power transmission utilities in the world and 765 kV transmission technology plays a critical role in the electric power industry.
In October 2024, WSP and POWER joined forces to lead the transformation of the world’s energy infrastructure by harnessing the full potential of both firms.
The scope of the MOU involves collaboration on technical expertise, safety processes, asset management and advanced technologies. Projects may include 765 kV transmission and substation infrastructure, transmission planning and load forecasting, testing and commissioning, and gas insulated solutions for power delivery.
“Enhancing transmission infrastructure will help improve reliability, reduce congestion, and enable a more flexible energy supply to meet evolving energy needs,” said Holger Peller, WSP global director of Power and Energy. “This MOU confirms WSP can offer the most comprehensive expertise for the emerging 765 kV need in the U.S.”
Meeting the growing demand for more secure, efficient and lower-carbon electricity, calls for a 60 percent increase in the U.S.’s transmission capacity by the year 2030. This expansion is crucial for integrating renewable energy sources while facilitating the transition to a more reliable and sustainable energy system.
Driven by this growing power demand, integration of large-scale conventional and renewable energy, and remote generation sources that must be connected to urban load centers, the MOU will benefit utilities and independent power producers who seek to add more generation, increase reliability and modernize the grid.
“Our goal is to provide unparalleled service. POWERGRID brings a wide array of technical and management expertise in 765 kV with a proven track record,” said Vipul Desai, senior project manager for POWER. “WSP employs strong relationships and a global strategy to secure engineering resources. Bringing in resources to meet project needs and industry developments helps us provide a responsive approach as engineering demands change over time.”
