We delivered on that vision with a single-shaft combined cycle configuration featuring two identical power trains. This setup allows one unit to operate while the other is offline, ensuring continuous reliability and flexibility for Caithness Energy and the communities they serve.
The project site presented significant space constraints, so we optimized the plant layout to accommodate maintenance operations without compromising performance or schedule. To accelerate delivery, we worked closely with our substation team to design and construct the 500-kV switchyard in parallel with the plant, creating multiple efficiencies and keeping the project on track.
Engineering excellence
The 1050-MW Caithness Moxie Freedom Generation Plant is recognized as one of the most efficient users of locally supplied natural gas in the region, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. The plant features two GE HA.02 single-shaft power trains equipped with air-cooled condensers, CMI heat recovery steam generators, GE steam turbine generators and a GE DCS system. The Shickshinny 500-kV utility switchyard was designed and integrated to bring the plant online seamlessly. To enhance the plant’s flexibility, we addressed water conservation by incorporating dry-cooling technology, which reduced water usage by 95% compared to a similar-sized, water-cooled plant.
This project set a new benchmark for reliable, flexible and environmentally responsible energy at scale.
