After signing contracts with two multinational companies, JTS needed to rapidly scale up production of its diesel generator sets. Each set — roughly the size of a railroad boxcar and weighing up to 55 tons — is designed to supply electricity to data centers and includes an enclosure shell, double-wall fuel tank and diesel engine with an exhaust system.
We partnered with JTS and a general contractor on a design-build delivery model to help them meet client demand at record speed.
Fast-track permitting
The 170,000 square-foot generation skid production facility includes manufacturing, warehouse and office space for approximately 120 JTS employees.
To meet an aggressive timeline, the team delivered four separate permit packages: city design review, city site improvements, foundation/core and shell and tenant improvement. This multi-package approach allowed construction to begin while final designs were still being completed.
Optimized for minimal down time
The facility enables the production of at least one complete generator set per day and supports all phases from raw material intake to final hook-ups and storage.
The layout was optimized for redundancy, with multiple production streams and bays for fabrication, sandblasting and painting, supported by four cranes. This design ensures that production can continue even if one stream requires maintenance, allowing up to 20 units to move through the line simultaneously.
Improved material handling
Each unit weighs several tons, and instead of welding handles to rotate and test the internal shell, the facility uses four-wheel cranes capable of rotating completed units. Additionally, couch-sized tugs and carts transport each unit through the various phases of production.
The impact of this single facility is significant. The new plant will provide over 300 diesel generator sets to data centers across the U.S. It supplements JTS’s existing operations, improves upon previous designs, streamlines production flow and positions the company to expand into rapidly growing technology markets.
