Spanning 60 miles between the Harry Allen Substation and Eldorado Substation, this 500-kV transmission project expands the electrical connection between Southern California markets and renewable energy resources in Nevada.
We partnered with DesertLink to bring this ambitious project to life. As the engineer of record, we crafted innovative design engineering solutions that facilitated the safe and efficient operation of the transmission line.
The line helps to alleviate congestion and bolster transmission capabilities across the region, all while navigating sensitive desert terrains.
Into the infrastructure
We navigated more than 20 different transmission line crossings, ensuring adherence to the engineering standards of multiple utilities. Our studies on ground fault current led us to design a system that safeguards against optical ground wire damage during potential ground faults. By conducting insulation coordination studies, we achieved flexible yet cost-effective line designs that maximize performance. We also provided DesertLink with confidence in the line's ability to withstand lightning strikes and other challenges.
Committing to connection
This collaborative endeavor required synergy with multiple stakeholders including the California Independent System Operator, NV Energy, Southern California Edison, Los Angele Department of Water and Power, Western Area Power Administration and Valley Electric Association. We performed detailed design studies such as switching transient analysis, parallel resonance screening, lightning performance evaluation and more — each step cementing our commitment to reliable and future-ready infrastructure.
