The open-air lobby arrival pavilion serves Hawaiian Air passengers as a primary point of entrance and check-in lobby. To help create an inviting and aesthetically pleasing space, Hawaiian Airlines engaged the WSP lighting design team to illuminate the upper reaches of the lobby with a projected pattern, while ensuring these projections could be seen in widely changing natural light conditions. The concept was to project overlapping palm fronds, an iconic pattern of Hawaii that exemplifies island living, using theatrical gobo projectors. Beginning with a concept image from the architect of a leaf pattern on a wall, we studied and developed the imagery options with mock-ups and computer modeling using AGI software before arriving at the result shown in the photos below.
