The open-air lobby arrival pavilion serves Hawaiian Air passengers as a primary point of entrance and check-in lobby. To help create an inviting and aesthetically pleasing space, Hawaiian Airlines engaged the WSP lighting design team to illuminate the upper reaches of the lobby with a projected pattern, while ensuring these projections could be seen in widely changing natural light conditions. The concept was to project overlapping palm fronds, an iconic pattern of Hawaii that exemplifies island living, using theatrical gobo projectors. Beginning with a concept image from the architect of a leaf pattern on a wall, we studied and developed the imagery options with mock-ups and computer modeling using AGI software before arriving at the result shown in the photos below.

During design, it was critical for our team to determine the right output of the light fixtures since daylight was close by and would impact the pattern legibility. Our study served as a calibration of the size and the image legibility of the projection. We also developed full technical specifications and mounting details to work with the visible structural elements of the open-air pavilion. As part of the analysis of options, we provided information on cost budgeting and procurement lead times to fit within the client’s opening schedule and business plans.

Additionally, our scope included replacing the task area focused down lighting. Our team was able to do this in a way to not compete with the decorative images provided by the ceiling projections. Throughout the process we closely collaborated with our WSP colleagues in Hawaii as they were providing the MEP design services including the electrical design for the renovation of the arrival pavilion concurrently.
