Infrastructure technology is constantly advancing, and rail control systems are no exception. Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd is implementing an urban mobility programme to increase the Helsinki metro system's capacity and reliability, as well as account for the updates of several systems in use that are approaching or are already at the end of their lifecycle.
With a combination of local knowledge in our Helsinki office, the Intelligent Transport Services and Rail Teams, and a global base of digital service and solution experts to draw from, WSP was selected to work as part of the team assessing, scoping, and testing a new solution to manage an updated Helsinki Metro Train Control System (TCS).
This new continuous TCS will enable shorter headways and increase the safety level of metro operations. To manage the increased flow of information through the system, it is expected to use packet-based data transmission of train control information, requiring the building of a new radio network for this data transmission between the train and wayside equipment. It is also the intention of Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd to further leverage the new radio network in the future to fulfil the business, performance, and critical requirements of a diverse range of users and systems.
