New Kabul Compound Power Plant | Afghanistan

Reducing electricity costs with fast, customized power solutions

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Philadelphia District required contingency power support for its emergency power operations and maintenance program for multiple forward operating bases in Afghanistan.

Challenge

To increase efficiency, the USACE needed within an accelerated schedule new switchgears and generators as well as the removal of old generators in its existing power plants at the new Kabul Compound.

Solution

WSP combined two existing power plants into one capable of producing 5 MW of continuous power. The new switchgear allowed the generators to be connected to a common bus prior to distributing the power, providing a more efficient power plant. WSP upgraded generators on the site to share the complete site load between all working generator sets, forming the combined power plant in 189 days, while performing operations and maintenance duties. The work included:

  • Removal of three government-furnished generators and installation of three CPR generators.
  • Installation of a 40-foot containerized generator adjacent to the power house.
  • Repairs and upgrades to the existing main distribution panel.
  • Construction of an extensive cable tray assembly used to support distribution conductors.
  • Installation of an 8000A rated switch board.
