Located just south of Kandahar City, Kandahar Airfield is a major U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization air hub supporting operations and logistics in southwestern Afghanistan.
Challenge
WSP was selected to redesign and upgrade the existing power infrastructure at this sprawling airfield in the Afghan desert.
Solution
WSP completed:
- Testing, commissioning and placing into commercial operation a recently constructed 2 MW, 60-Hertz power plant, enclosed in a permanent structure and comprised of three open gensets.
- Associated electrical equipment and switchgear.
- 13.8 kV, four-feeder underground distribution system.
- Fuel storage.
After commissioning, WSP operated and maintained the plant with no outages or lost time incidents.
