We partnered with Zorlu Energy to grow its renewable energy footprint by expanding the Kizildere-3 Geothermal Power Plant, the largest geothermal power plant in Turkey. To determine the optimal approach, we conducted feasibility studies, recommended advanced flash-cycle technology and provided detailed design and equipment specification services. By leveraging an existing permit, we helped increase output and delivered power to 165,000 more homes, supporting Turkey’s transition away from fossil fuels.
This project helped Turkey surpass 1-GW of installed geothermal capacity, a major step toward a lower-carbon energy future. Drawing on our experience from a previous Kizildere project, we delivered the new plant on a tight schedule using super-efficient triple-flash technology.
Using a process patented by our teams, we fully leveraged efficiency gains by applying a triple-flash design developed for a previous power plant. Triple-flash technology extracts geothermal steam at three pressure levels, improving overall plant performance and sustainability. We combined the triple-flash system with a binary cycle unit, resulting in one of the few triple-flash plus combined cycle geothermal plants in operation. With permits already in place and prior experience, we were able to execute the project quickly and cost-effectively.
The power plant created new job opportunities and offers tours to students and industry groups to learn about the technology. Local universities and chemical suppliers are using the facility to research how to make geothermal power even more efficient.
Our work was recognized with the 2018 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Award for Engineering Excellence — both in Idaho and nationally — honoring the innovation and efficiency of our design.
