In response to growing energy demands in the Greater Toronto Area, the Ontario Power Authority sought a reliable solution to meet peak electricity needs and provide rapid response for high-demand periods. The solution was a gas-fired peaking facility designed for quick-start capability and environmental responsibility.
We supported the development of the York Energy Centre, a 400-MW simple cycle gas-fired power plant. We delivered full architect-engineer design services for the installation of two Siemens SGT6-5000-F4 turbine-generator packages, including civil and structural engineering for equipment foundations. We also provided balance of plant equipment identification, controls engineering for balance of plant interface with turbine controls, procurement support and engineering support during startup.
Fast, flexible power
The facility’s simple cycle design enables it to reach full capacity within 30 minutes, ensuring a rapid response to peak demand. Operating between 260 and 1,300 hours annually, the plant supplements the grid during critical periods, enhancing regional energy reliability.
Environmental stewardship
Equipped with Ultra Low NOx combustors and Continuous Emissions Monitoring systems, the plant meets stringent provincial and federal emissions standards. The air-cooled turbines eliminate the need for water, further reducing environmental impact.
The York Energy Centre stands as a dependable energy source for Ontario’s growing population while delivering a facility that balances performance, reliability and sustainability.
