For Tino, engineering was more than a solid and useful career choice; it was a calling that was driven by an innate knack for logical reasoning and problem-solving.
''My journey into the world of engineering was a natural progression for me, leading me to pursue a degree in the profession," he explains.
Tino's educational background includes a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Degree in Electrical Engineering, which he completed with honours (Cum laude).
In line with cultivating a growth mindset, Tino's education and passion for professional development hasn't stopped there. "Looking forward, I'm set on furthering my education with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management and Administration at Stellenbosch University,'' he says.
Tino's professional journey has been just as noteworthy. It includes more than a decade of registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the distinction of being an Accredited Professional with the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA).
He credits both his academic achievements and continuous professional development for significantly influencing his career within the building services consultancy industry. An illustrious background in working on challenging projects, including iconic high-rise buildings in Cape Town's bustling central business district, further primed him for his current role at WSP.
''The successful completion of such projects fueled my drive to join WSP, a prominent global engineering consultancy firm. This transition opened doors to intricate, international mega-projects, igniting my passion for engineering even further,'' he explains.
As is the case for many changemakers who live passionately, Tino's day begins early, before 5am. He explains that rising before dawn enables him to either fit in a gym session or a cycling adventure. For him, the latter is more than an exercise modality, as it enables him to combine a passion for physical fitness, exploration, and the thrill of the open road and/or trail.
''Following this energetic start, I dive into the intricate world of engineering, with a focus on various aspects of cost-effective design, financial control, forecasting and the implementation of sustainability principles, which aligns with WSP’s global drive towards net zero. The most exciting facet of my day is the opportunity to mentor and empower the next generation of engineers, drawing from my experience of coaching cricket and instilling the same values of discipline, dedication and teamwork,'' he enthuses.
Most successful leaders and individuals recognise the importance of work-life balance, and Tino does too. When not immersed in his professional commitments, he finds immense joy in spending quality time with his beautiful wife and exploring the rich tapestry of South Africa.
''These personal moments are essential for maintaining a balanced and fulfilling life. My family holds a cherished place in my heart, and I'm deeply committed to nurturing our close-knit bond," he stresses.
Beyond that, Tino also has a profound passion for community upliftment. To that end, he engages in a variety of activities and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of those around him, with a dedicated focus on giving back to and supporting the growth of his community.
For Tino, each of his passions complement the other. He explains that, for example, his experience in coaching cricket adds a unique dimension to his approach to mentoring and empowering young engineers, as it instils the values of teamwork, leadership, and continuous improvement.
''These passions and values converge to shape the unique mosaic of my life and work,'' he concludes.
