Challenges

The client, New Market Property Development JV, wanted to develop a retail centre to meet the shopping requirements of communities in and around Alberton, with the aim of providing a safe, pleasant and accessible shopping environment. The challenge was developing a centre of that size – 45 000m2 – within the deadline.

To help them meet this tight deadline, New Market Property Development JV called in WSP to oversee the design and construction monitoring of the civil, mechanical and structural engineering components, heating, ventilation and air conditioning services, site supervision, quality monitoring and budget control.

Solutions

The project was completed successfully and on time, with Checkers Hyper, an anchor tenant, and a few other retailers receiving early beneficial occupation. Other anchor tenants in the retail development include Builders Warehouse, Virgin Active, Food Lover’s Market and Mugg & Bean.

A strong focal point is the centre’s design, which allows in ample natural light, and a key service is the HVAC, which uses the latest cutting-edge technology.
