1970s facility says goodbye to poor layouts

The team behind the major renovation of Michallon Hospital, also known as CHU Grenoble, has an overarching goal in mind: security and modernization. Too often hospital life is slowed down by inefficient structures and poor layouts. Movement was prioritized in the revamp designed by the architect Michel BEAUVAIS and our team in the south-eastern French city of Grenoble.

Future-Ready

Through careful design and a holistic approach, the project is harnessing the latest research in hospital organization to improve both clinical outcomes and day-to-day life for patients and staff in this 2,200-bed teaching hospital.

As well as restructuring the hospital’s internal layout, the €99M overhaul will see the facility extended to create a new area for the main entrance, plus new public spaces. The vision is to transform this 1970s complex into a hospital fit for the future, with facilities to be proud of, from the rooftop heliport to a spacious lobby that welcomes new visitors.

Major Modernization

The project, due to complete in 2023, is split into four phases. The first includes the creation of the main lobby, reorganization of 6,000 square meters of hospital space, plus fire engineering work on the lower levels and car park. The second will focus on increasing capacity, building a new 7,700 square-meter area for day hospitalizations. And the final two stages will revamp the hospital’s Chartreuse and Belledone wings. In all, more than 50,000 square meters will be brought in line with modern clinical and safety standards.
