Preparing for Transition

The rapid adoption of advanced vehicle technologies is transforming how transit fleets operate, maintain assets and plan for the future.

Electrification, alternative fuels, connected systems and automation are becoming standard across public and private fleets, but the success of this transition depends on more than vehicles and infrastructure alone. It requires a workforce that’s prepared to support these new technologies.

This white paper explores how fleet transitions are reshaping workforce needs across maintenance, operations, IT, facilities and planning teams, and examines new skills and roles required as technologies evolve faster than traditional training models.

Mike Finnern, senior vice president and national zero-emissions fleet lead, outlines practical strategies for building a future‑ready workforce, from training models and curriculum frameworks to certifications, career pathways and funding opportunities.
