Challenge
To address severe power shortages, Bagram Airfield was in immediate need of expanded power generation capacity. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers required a cost-effective and fuel-efficient solution to meet Bagram Airfield’s power needs within only 55 days.
Solution
WSP was commissioned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to install a 30 MW power plant on a fast-track basis. WSP completed installation, testing and commissioning of the power plant in 55 days — including mobilization of equipment to the site — and then began plant operations.
WSP's cost-effective solution repositioned power generation and supporting electrical equipment from three different sites within Afghanistan, while airlifting other essential material from Dubai directly into Bagram. The installation team worked around the clock to finish the electrical installation. A highly fuel efficient solution saved the client millions of dollars annually in fuel consumption alone.
The plant was demobilized in 2014 when WSP assumed operations and maintenance of the adjacent 56 MW gas turbine power plant and Bagram’s base-wide electrical distribution and lighting infrastructure.
