Capital Health’s new hospital sets a benchmark for patient-centered care, with specialized centers dedicated to maternal and child health, oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, neurosciences and infectious diseases. The project’s master plan unfolds in three phases, beginning with a seven-story patient bed tower. Alongside, the campus includes a medical office building that houses the Cancer Center; a medical/surgical building with pediatric and adult emergency care; ICU and surgical suites; as well as a central utility plant supporting the main electrical substations, emergency generators, chillers, boilers and critical infrastructure systems.

The medical center occupies a 165-acre site and is purposefully designed to enhance patient comfort and care, featuring all private rooms. An atrium links the main hospital to an adjacent building with physician offices, making it easy for patients to move between appointments and hospital services. The facility redefines health care delivery by offering amenities that support both patients and their loved ones, ensuring everyone’s needs are met in a welcoming, healing environment.

Overcoming site challenges

Although advanced medical facilities always demand complex engineering, this hospital project faced particularly distinctive challenges due to its site. For example, placing the central utility plant was especially tricky because the site is bordered by an interstate highway, a major rail line, an airport and a natural gas pipeline. To ensure we maintained compliance with original land use approvals — specifically regarding water usage and sewer discharge — we partnered with a plumbing equipment manufacturer. Together, we introduced an innovative product that allowed the project to meet all regulatory requirements while delivering the hospital’s high-performance standards.

Healthy buildings

Midway through the design process, the client set an ambitious target: achieving LEED Gold certification. To reach this goal, WSP’s sustainable design experts integrated a variety of environmentally responsible strategies. They prioritized high-efficiency equipment and water-saving fixtures, reimagined the hospital’s lighting controls, and implemented advanced HVAC zoning to enhance energy performance. The design also included two rooftop gardens and a sophisticated water treatment and rainwater harvesting system, all working together to meet LEED’s rigorous standards while creating a healthier environment for patients and staff.
