Our team provided detailed design and procurement services for 25 procurement packages related to the power plant, energy storage system and liquified natural gas storage facility. We also provided owner’s engineering (OE) services for a new seawater intake pipe. Other project upgrades included more efficient lighting, cooling and refrigeration for the base and improved controls and water conservation measures.
Our design included all the plant’s electrical systems and raceways, including site fiber optics for communications, mechanical piping and a 4.16-kV switchgear in a pre-manufactured outdoor enclosure. Due to the base’s island location, all materials were flown or shipped from the U.S. mainland to the base, requiring considerable planning and coordination to avoid construction delays.
The new 20-MW combined cycle power plant will help the base’s lower its costs by using more efficient and less expensive natural gas as a primary fuel source. Our collaborative efforts resulted in a 49% reduction in annual energy costs at the base.
Our past involvement in Navy projects and contracts contributed valuable insight into the Navy’s expectations. In our role as OE, we confirmed each design met specific standards and codes required by the Navy. As a mission-critical site, this project provides enhanced energy reliability, resilience and efficiency to the Naval Station.
