Perelman Quadrangle, “the Quad,” at University of Pennsylvania is a 500,000-square-foot undergrad residential complex comprised of 40 individual buildings that share interior circulation and below-grade utility space. Following a feasibility study, we were hired to provide engineering solutions and 3D laser scanning for a phased renovation of the Quad.
Difficult conditions? No problem.
Difficult conditions within the service tunnel caused other firms to pass on the project. To ensure we could meet client needs and rigorous renovation standards, we first performed a test scan. Following that successful attempt, final 3D scans were completed over three sessions, covering approximately 6,500 SF per session.
Scanning revealed some incredibly difficult site conditions: low ceilings and headroom, segmented utility crawlspace, little or no lighting and temperatures over 100° F. Our team devised creative solutions to capture challenging areas, including assembling custom lighting rigs and building a dolly for some of the hard-to-see and reach sections. Despite these constraints, the team accurately captured existing piping, conduit and equipment to 1/16” accuracy in preparation for the Quad renovations.
