What is 3D scanning and how does it work?

Reality capture scanning uses advanced scanning technology to create a detailed 3D representation of physical environments in any sector. The process generates a point cloud, a collection of millions of 3D photorealistic data points, that define surfaces in 3D space. These point clouds can be aligned using survey control for accuracy and then integrated into design or analysis software.

How long does scanning take, and what factors affect timing?

Capture time depends on site size, complexity, and environmental conditions. While scanning can often occur during production, factors like lighting, vibration, inclement weather, steam, heavy production activity, high concentrations of dust, extreme temperatures or restricted access may require adjustments. Planning scanning operations during downtime or phased scanning can help minimize disruption.

Can reality capture data be used to generate digital twins and drawings?

Yes. Existing scans can be appended with many other forms of data, enabling ongoing updates. Point clouds can feed into BIM models, CAD drawings, and even digital twin platforms for asset management and predictive analysis. This makes reality capture a foundational step in digital transformation strategies.

Why is survey control important and how do I apply it?

Survey control ensures that your captured data is accurate and properly referenced to real-world or local coordinate systems. Applying control points prior to scanning allows scan technicians to align point clouds with existing site plans, GIS or survey data, reducing errors and making integration seamless.

What software and file formats are supported?

Reality capture data works with industry-standard platforms such as Autodesk Revit, ArcGIS, Revizto and more. Common file formats include LGSx, RCP, LAS, E57 and PTS, which can be imported into CAD, BIM and GIS applications for modeling and analysis.

How do I store, share and manage point cloud data?

Point cloud files are large and typically stored on secure servers or cloud platforms. Many teams use cloud-based collaboration tools to share and view data without transferring massive files. Hosting can be managed internally or through vendor platforms, depending on project needs.
