Writers Theatre

Studio Gang Architects have created an inviting, intimate, and energized new home for Writers Theatre, a nationally acclaimed drama company. With two primary performance spaces, it also contains a practice hall, support spaces and a feature public hall that can serve for impromptu performances. For this last space, a dramatic wood structure, (including a striking hanging perimeter walkway) was developed in a collaborative team effort. WSP USA provided structural engineering.

A One-of-a-Kind Structure

Considerable technical rigor went into bringing this one-of-a-kind structure to life. Iterative non-linear analyses studies for the screen – to develop a configuration that hit the mark on aesthetics, performance and constructability. For the unique ‘cat's paw’ connection devised by Peter Heppel for the perimeter hangers, WSP USA, formerly Halvorson and Partners, worked with the team to create a custom testing and verification program for fabrication, performance, durability and treatment concerns.
