WSP has played a significant role in the delivery of the Woodfibre LNG Project, one of the world’s first net-zero LNG export facilities, located near Squamish, British Columbia. Through a series of multidisciplinary assignments totaling approximately $38 million in engineering and construction services, WSP has supported the project from detailed design through construction execution. Key services have included marine infrastructure engineering, construction management, specialized mechanical systems design and geotechnical engineering. WSP’s involvement has provided critical technical expertise to support the safe and efficient construction of the facility’s marine terminal and associated infrastructure. In parallel with its technical contributions, WSP has strengthened its long-term commitment to the region through a formal partnering agreement with the Squamish Nation, creating a framework for collaboration and supporting future infrastructure and development opportunities within the Squamish area.

WSP’s work includes construction management services for the Woodfibre Marine Terminal substructure installation program, providing on-site leadership, field engineering, contractor coordination, quality oversight and construction support during execution of the marine works. WSP also delivered the detailed design of the marine terminal facilities, including marine structures, foundations and the associated infrastructure required to support LNG export operations. In addition, WSP completed the detailed engineering of the facility’s damping system, supporting the design and implementation of specialized marine infrastructure systems and providing technical support through the fabrication, testing, installation and commissioning phases. Complementing these efforts, WSP provided geotechnical engineering services for temporary excavation support systems, delivering design and construction-phase expertise to facilitate safe site development activities. Together, these projects demonstrate WSP’s integrated capabilities across engineering, marine infrastructure, geotechnical services, Indigenous partnership development and construction management, helping advance one of Canada’s most significant energy infrastructure developments toward successful completion.

WSP provided environmental, geotechnical and ground improvement support for the Tilbury LNG Ground Densification Project on Tilbury Island in Delta, British Columbia as part of FortisBC’s LNG facility expansion program. Acting in a design-build capacity, WSP developed and implemented ground improvement solutions to address potentially liquefiable sands and overbank silt deposits, helping mitigate seismic and liquefaction risks associated with the expansion of critical LNG infrastructure.

The project included site preparation, the installation of 927 stone columns to depths of up to 31.2 metres, rapid impact compaction and comprehensive QA/QC monitoring using cone penetration tests. WSP also supported large-scale ground improvement works for the LNG process facilities—including approximately 3,600 vibro-replacement stone columns—and contributed to the seismic stabilization of the Fraser River dike protecting the site. Through its integrated geotechnical and construction-focused approach, WSP helped deliver safe, code-compliant ground conditions that support the long-term resilience and reliability of one of British Columbia’s most important LNG facilities.

Make it

When considering the viability of a lower-emission fuel project, there are many constraints to consider outside of the molecule.

Our experience runs from traditional power generation technologies, through to emerging renewable technologies and their associated systems.  Our dedicated energy specialists can rely on our internal network of engineering subject matter experts as it relates to the creation of lower-emission fuels.

Move it

With a 40+ year history of pipelines, storage terminals, marine jetties and rail infrastructure experience, WSP is a global leader in engineering and designing the infrastructure that moves energy. For LNG specifically, our teams design cryogenic piping, marine loading/offloading terminals and regasification facilities, in addition to the emerging infrastructure needed to move hydrogen, ammonia and e-fuels to market by truck, rail, pipeline and ship.

Use it

Leveraging our experience in domestic, commercial and industrial heating systems, WSP is supporting efforts to decarbonize heating by utilizing alternative energy sources, including LNG, hydrogen, RNG and e-fuels for transportation and heating.

We demonstrate our fleet knowledge and capabilities, with electric and alternative fuel powertrain deployments on transit and commercial fleets globally. Supporting public transportation organizations as they shift their fleets to zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), including fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) powered by lower-emission fuels.
