An Alternate Perspective on Road Usage Charging

WSP’s Jeff Heilstedt looks at other ways highway repair funds could be raised in an EV world and suggests that viable solutions might already be in place.

Electric vehicles have made it necessary to consider fuel tax alternatives like road usage charging. But are there better ways to fund highway projects and maintenance?

Could tolling be an alternative to fuel taxes? While some of the infrastructure is in place, it would be expensive — not to mention time consuming — to install.

One alternative to RUC might be to equip retail charge stations with a gas tax simulation where users pay a fee for every kilowatt charged into their vehicle.
