Contributing author Matt Durshimer discusses an innovative use of construction material, improved safety and connecting communities in the design and construction of Florida’s new, dual structure John T. Brooks Bridge over Santa Rosa Sound.
Roads & Bridge Magazine recently feature an article co-authored by Evan Lawrence of Superior Construction and Matt Durshimer, WSP USA project manager, on the use of new technology, community safety and resilience in the design and construction of the new bridge.
The Florida Department of Transportation’s $171 million bridge replacement project is one of the nation’s first flexible filler internal tendon spliced girder bridges. The new structures will relieve traffic congestion, improve safety for vehicles above and boats below, as well as increase the structure’s resilience.
The design-build team addressed the site-specific challenges and environmental commitments in the design but developing a bridge that can enrich the community was also a key project concern.
“A beach town on the Emerald Coast, the streamlined design was inspired by the rising and setting of the sun. The wide pedestrian and bike path includes shade areas with seating and park space below the bridge approaches,” said Durshimer.
