Airports do not need to wait for electric aircraft and Advanced Air Mobility technologies to fully mature before preparing for the future. A recent WSP study for the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments developed electrification roadmaps for six general aviation airports in southwest Ohio, identifying practical steps that airports across the U.S. can apply to their own planning.
The study shows how investments such as expanded EV charging, electrical service upgrades and site infrastructure can deliver benefits today while creating capacity for future aviation technologies. It also underscores the importance of tailoring plans to each airport’s operations, community needs, physical constraints and long-term objectives.
Regional collaboration emerged as another key lesson. By planning together, smaller airports can share resources, reduce planning costs and strengthen their readiness for future funding and investment.
