With the title of “the worst traffic bottleneck in BC”, the 45-year-old 5-lane bridge between Surrey and Coquitlam was in need of an upgrade. Its replacement, the new 10-lane cable-stayed Port Mann Bridge, is one of the widest bridges in the world, at 2.02 km long and 65 metres at its widest.

WSP, in joint venture, was responsible for the onshore design of the project including transportation design and management, construction review and certification. The project required complete redesign of the complex Cape Horn Interchange at the west end of the Port Mann Bridge to simplify the interchange and improve traffic safety and efficiency.

In order to ensure public and worker safety, WSP applied state of the science methods to assess the potential air quality and human health risk impacts in support of environmental assessments. During and after the environmental assessments, we engaged and consulted with the public and regulatory agencies to address comments and concerns regarding the project. During project construction, we were entrusted to provide air quality management services to ensure air emissions are being mitigated and managed to minimize air quality and human health impacts.

We was also contracted to provide a construction management services and a technical resource. Throughout the project phases until completion, we was entrusted to manage the full spectrum of construction contract administration and field services activities.
