Denise Lacchin Named the 2022 Brownfielder of the Year at 2022 Brownie Awards

National recognition for WSP projects in the brownfields sector.

WSP took centre stage at the 2022 Brownie Awards in Toronto, as the Dow-Petromont Rehabilitation Project captures the Remediate award and Denise Lacchin takes the coveted honour of being named the 2022 Brownfielder of the Year.

Lacchin becomes the first WSP staff member to capture the Brownfielder of the Year, given out to an individual who is making a significant contribution to the advancement of brownfield remediation and rehabilitation in Canada. She has been very active in helping the Ontario government develop its new excess soils regulations, providing presentations to industry events across Canada to help educate the industry on how the regulations will impact their day-to-day operations.

The Dow-Petromont Rehabilitation Project in Quebec commanded a large-scale solution, one that the team worked two years to determine how to deliver. The solution, an innovative co-composting system, lead to the successful treatment of 190,000 cubic metres of treated soil, with an additional 35,000 cubic metres treated through rhizodegradation. This successful implementation landed the team the 2022 Brownie Award in the Remediate category.

Three additional projects involving WSP also received recognition at the 2022 Brownie Awards. The Manitou a bi Bii daziigae, Red River College (RRC) Polytech project in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which WSP provided civil engineering and traffic consulting services for, was the winner in the Rebuild category. The York Recreation Centre in Toronto, Ontario, which WSP provided civil engineering services for, was given the award for Best Small Project. The Maple Land Fire and Rescue Centre, located in North Vancouver, British Columbia, was named as a finalist for the Renew award.
