From Intern to Expert: Meet Kari McGlinn

Kari McGlinn’s journey with WSP began in January 1997 as a sophomore at Arizona State University. Starting as a spring term intern, Kari quickly demonstrated her business acumen and passion for the field, transitioning from data entry in accounts payable to various roles including project administrator, regional project accountant, operations manager to now senior vice president of finance. Kari’s story is one of continuous growth, driven by curiosity and a willingness to step out of her comfort zone, ultimately leading her to a pivotal role in operations and finance.

Can you describe a pivotal moment or project that significantly advanced your expertise?

One of the most pivotal moments in my career was about seven years ago when a mentor recognized the signs of burnout in me. Once they pointed it out, it was hard to ignore the question of “what’s next for my career?” This question led me to apply for new positions that were outside my direct line and to a new role within the organization.

My new role pushed me out of my comfort zone, transitioning from project accounting, where I felt I had learned everything, to operations. It opened my eyes to the broader complexities of running an organization and a business. It was scary and challenging and just what I needed to reinvigorate my passion for the work that I do.

This shift was incredibly beneficial for my growth. It gave me a deeper understanding of the pressures and decisions that impact the business’s operations. Now, in my current role, I can better anticipate financial outcomes and advise on the necessary choices to help the organization meet its operational objectives and support business line leadership.
