WSP, Toronto Transit Partners Capture National Award for Highway 401/409 Project

WSP is proud to announce that the Highway 401/409 Twin SEM Tunnels Project has been recognized as the 2022 Project of the Year over $100 million by the Tunnelling Association of Canada (TAC). 

The annual Project of the Year Award for projects over $100 million is given to a team that has “… significantly contributed to a project in Canada, demonstrated the highest level of engineering skill, and shown insight and understanding of underground construction for a project in Canada.”

The two new rail tunnels were constructed under 21 active lanes of traffic Highway 401 and 409, alongside the existing active rail corridor, and had to be completed with zero impacts to either active transportation system. Adherence to this strict guideline was crucial during project construction, as any disruption to the rail or highways corridors would negatively impact hundreds of thousands of people each day.

The complex tunnelling project, expanding the Kitchener GO corridor as part of Metrolinx’s Regional Express Rail program, was developed by Toronto Transit Partners, a consortium consisting of EllisDon, STRABAG, WSP, Dr. G. Sauer & Partners, and Jensen Hughes. Metrolinx played an active role in working in partnership with the consortium, building the best possible solution for this intricate tunnelling project. 

The award was presented at the TAC Achievement Awards, part of the association’s annual conference, on November 3rd in Vancouver.
