Serving Canada’s only city in the northern territory of Nunavut, Iqaluit International Airport is an important transportation hub for the North and opens the region to development. The main terminal was built in 1896 as a regional airport for a town of 3,000, but now sees over 120,000 passengers a year.
Security Solutions that Maintain Operational Efficiencies
WSP was retained to address the Federal Government’s decision to enhance security screening processes at designated Canadian Airports, with scheduled passenger service, through the introduction of Explosive Detection System (EDS) technology. Preliminary work included a design brief, and a comprehensive engineering report required for approval, which served to identify items such as impacts on building structure, layout, construction staging and space planning for relocation of airline offices, staff and cargo operational areas. Our work included design and deployment of an EDS solution and manage its deployment at the airport and new baggage system without disrupting current operational efficiencies, and included a shortened tracking zone, fitting the entire EDS system into a compact area.
