First Kuwait Ring Road

Improving access to downtown Kuwait City while reducing traffic congestion

Better Mobility in Kuwait City

The First Kuwait Ring Road project allows traffic flow to avoid the heavily congested Jahra Roundabout when accessing Kuwait City’s business district.

By using a network of new at-grade roads, depressed roads in troughs and tunnels, elevated roads and bridges, the first phase of the First Kuwait Ring Road project significantly improved access to downtown Kuwait City while reducing traffic congestion.

Ensuring Smooth Delivery of the Project

WSP provided design services on the project, as well as the preparation of contract documents and tender review. In association with a local partner, WSP delivered construction supervision services on the development of a complex 7-kilometer stretch of highway surrounding the Jahra Gate intersection. Traffic maintenance is a key aspect of the work since the area is densely populated and the roadway passes new high-rise properties, as well as historic buildings.

WSP has developed four major detours to manage traffic flow, and maintains an extensive public awareness campaign to provide information for drivers during the construction.

Other project elements included storm water drainage, protection and relocation of existing utilities and environmental protection.

Closing the Loop

The First Ring Road significantly improves access to downtown Kuwait City while reducing traffic congestion. The southern section of the road has been in operation for a decade prior to the northern section’s construction. Once the northern section was completed, it will close the 9-mile (15-kilometer) loop and greatly streamline traffic flow in and around Kuwait City.
