City Rail Link (CRL) is the largest and most complex transport infrastructure project ever undertaken in Aotearoa New Zealand. As part of Link Alliance, WSP has worked with City Rail Link Ltd and Link Alliance members to help deliver a twin-tunnel underground rail link through central Auckland, including new stations at Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape and a redeveloped Maungawhau station. The project will transform how people move through Tāmaki Makaurau, increasing rail capacity, improving access to the city centre and wider region, and enabling faster, more frequent and better-connected journeys.

Helsinki’s Kruunuvuori Bridge, designed by WSP in Finland, is one of the world’s longest bridges solely for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

In Louisville and Lexington, at least 88 wrong-way driving crashes were recorded between 2015 and 2020, though the true number is likely higher. These incidents often result in severe injuries, fatalities and major traffic disruptions. The Thameslink programme upgraded a live north-south rail route through London, including infrastructure dating back to the 1860s. For Network Rail, we developed the safety programme for the European Train Control System (ETCS) in the central Core, enabling metro-style frequency while retaining a conventional signalling fallback. 

Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), the largest train operator in the Netherlands, is retrofitting its fleet of 176 double deck VIRM passenger EMUs as part of the national programme to extend the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) across the Dutch rail network.

WSP was appointed to support NS by preparing the Specification of System and Process Requirements (SSPR) and the Verification and Validation substantiation report, providing the technical and process requirements needed for inclusion in the formal EU tender documents. 

As state departments of transportation (DOTs) increasingly prioritize optimizing existing road networks over building new, costly infrastructure, a critical gap in transportation operations guidance remained—one that WSP and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) set out to address.

WSP’s placemaking and street design specialists helped deliver a major transformation of Strand Aldwych, converting one of London’s busiest and most congested roads into a new 7,000m2 pedestrian space. This makes the area a destination in its own right and an economic and social hub.
