  • Civil Engineering
  • Economics
  • Environmental Science (s) including Geography
  • Mathematics
  • Social Sciences and Human Factors
  • Transport Planning

Our Transport planners shape the future of cities and communities by contributing to sustainable travel systems. For graduates, a role within this team offers the excitement of combining data analysis, creativity, and collaboration to deliver meaningful change to the way people, goods and services are delivered across our society.

Each project brings new challenges; from integrating green technologies to enhancing mass transportation. Graduates can see the real-world impact of their work, engage with cutting-edge innovations, and help build safer, smarter environments.

What you could be involved in day to day

  • Data Analysis: Use transport data to explore how people travel, identify trends helping to shape, more sustainable transport solutions.
  • Project Management: Assist in planning and monitoring projects from concept to delivery.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Help capture feedback and work with clients, local authorities and communities to understand how transport projects can best support their needs.
  • Decarbonisation and future mobility: Integrate green technologies and sustainable planning as part of our solutions to projects.
  • Policy Development: Contribute to transportation policies and approaches from national guidance to local implementation strategies and evaluate the impacts of projects.

You may enjoy this team if you're curious about how people move and how transport can make places more connected, accessible and sustainable. If you enjoy problem-solving, analysing data and balancing the needs of communities, businesses and the environment, this could be the team for you.

Help deliver projects that matter

As a graduate in our Transport Planning team, you could contribute to a wide range of local and national projects that shape how people travel. From supporting city councils on demand management schemes such as congestion charging and Workplace Parking Levies to advising on public transport improvements, active travel initiatives and major infrastructure projects, you will help deliver evidence-based transport solutions.

  • Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering
  • Data Science, Geography, Maths & other STEM degrees considered
  • Psychology MSc
  • Public Policy or similar MSc
  • Transport Planning

The Future Mobility team works alongside a range of public and private sector clients to deliver projects focusing on new ideas, innovations, and trends in transport. As a graduate, you will explore how technology, sustainability and changing travel behaviours are shaping the future of movement, helping clients develop smarter, more inclusive and low-carbon transport solutions for the communities of tomorrow.

What you could be involved with day to day

  • Using human-centred design to change behaviours and encourage sustainable and inclusive transport modes.
  • Advising on the latest developments in zero emission mobility and alternative propulsion technologies.
  • Researching new transport trends and advising clients on how to adapt.
  • Analysing data from pilot projects to make the case for the implementation of new transport options.
  • Assessing the commercial viability of new mobility business models.

You may enjoy this team if you enjoy exploring emerging transport trends, developing creative solutions to mobility challenges, and helping clients understand the opportunities presented by new technologies, alternative fuels and zero-emission transport.

Help deliver projects that matter

Working with both public and private sector clients, you will contribute to innovative studies, business cases, strategies and pilot projects that help create smarter, safer and more sustainable transport systems for communities.

Graduate Strategic Modelling

Degree backgrounds considered:

  • Economics
  • Geography
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

WSP’s transport modelling team undertake a range of transport modelling work ranging from Strategic Modelling (large scale networks), Micro-simulation (highly detailed vehicle/infrastructure interaction), Public Transport Modelling (assessment of rail and bus movements) along with Pedestrian Modelling (detailed localised modelling of people). Different types of transport models can be used to assess transport interventions to see how they affect either the mode that people use and the route that people take to make a particular journey along with changes in trip destination.

Our transport models produce outputs used in assessing the impacts on: The environment of transport interventions. New developments (housing, employment). Traffic through the introduction of congestion charging, parking controls or Low Emission Zones, and interventions using a business case application for funding.

What you could be involved with day to day

  • Building and analysing transport models to understand how people, vehicles and public transport move across networks.
  • Using data to assess the impact of new developments, infrastructure investments and transport interventions.
  • Supporting strategic, traffic, public transport and pedestrian modelling projects for a range of clients.
  • Interpreting model outputs and translating complex data into clear insights and recommendations.
  • Using industry software and analytical tools to model future travel demand and transport network performance.

You may enjoy working in this team if you enjoy using data, analysis and problem-solving to understand how people travel and how transport networks can be improved. This team is a great fit for graduates who are curious, analytical and interested in using technology to inform decisions.

Help deliver projects that matter

You will help develop and apply transport models that inform some of the UK's most significant transport and infrastructure decisions. You could work on projects assessing the impact of new housing and employment developments, evaluating major transport schemes, supporting business cases for funding, or analysing policies such as congestion charging, parking controls and Low Emission Zones.
