Apprenticeships provide practical training that complements theoretical knowledge and offer pathways to gain essential skills. Apprenticeships broaden access to careers, providing opportunities for young people and career changers who might not pursue a university degree. They bridge the gap for those who can’t afford unpaid work, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds. Employers can trust the quality of training apprentices receive, ensuring they are well-prepared for their roles.
How can industry partnerships enhance the effectiveness of training programs?
Bootcamps and ad hoc training are valuable for upskilling opportunities. This is especially important with new developments like Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), which require upskilling of the current workforce. For example, WSP is collaborating with CIEEM and a local authority to develop bootcamps aimed at upskilling Local Planning Authority (LPA) ecologists and planners in BNG and offsetting, as well as broader programmes for career changers and returners.
Industry partnerships can enhance training programmes by collaborating with experts and educational institutions to align curriculums with industry standards. These partnerships provide access to the latest technologies, practical training opportunities, and mentoring.
What would success in enhancing diversity, inclusion, and apprenticeship programs look like for WSP and the ecology sector?
Success would see the Level 4 Apprenticeship programmes up and running, with apprentices employed across the industry, including individuals who might not have had the opportunity to enter an ecology role otherwise.
This would create a diverse workforce with clear pathways for aspiring ecologists, attracting a wide range of candidates and promoting inclusivity. High-quality, practical training aligned with industry expectations will develop a skilled workforce.
Diversity brings varied perspectives, fostering creative solutions and innovative approaches. Diverse teams are better equipped to consider different approaches and make informed decisions.
