In May 2022, the UKGBC formed a technical steering group – with representatives from the BRE, BBP, Carbon Trust, IStructE, CIBSE, RIBA, RICS, and LETI – to establish a single methodology for defining and verifying Net Zero Carbon Aligned Buildings in the UK.
After more than two years of industry consultation and technical development, the first pilot of the Standard was launched in September 2024. The Standard is based on top-down UK carbon budgets and bottom-up real-world project data. It sets mandatory requirements for stakeholders to meet to achieve a Net Zero Carbon Aligned Building status.
Feedback was gathered during the pilot testing period to assess the feasibility of targets and identify opportunities for improvement. Following the results of the trial period, Version 1 of the Standard was launched in March 2026. The industry can also officially register intent to verify a building for Net Zero Carbon Alignment, with verification expected to officially launch in Spring 2026.
Verifying Net Zero Carbon Aligned Buildings
The verification framework and methodology are projected to launch in Spring 2026. Ahead of this, you can prepare by:
- Registering your building with the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, which will be added to a UK NZCBS register of buildings on the website.
- Building your evidence base by providing key information about your building
