WSP's Steve Denton elected Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering

Denton appointed to a three-year term from September 2023 and has been RAEng Fellow since 2014.

Steve Denton, Head of Discipline for Civil & Bridge Engineering at WSP UK, the multi-disciplinary professional services consultancy, has been elected Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng). 

Appointed to a three-year term from September 2023, Steve will be responsible for coordination across the Academy’s activities on skills, research, innovation, enterprise, engineering policy, awards, diversity and inclusion, and external affairs.

His election as Vice President for Committee Coordination was formally approved at the Royal Academy's Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 19 September. Steve will also serve as a Trustee.

I’m tremendously excited to be taking on this important role within the Royal Academy of Engineering. Over the past decade, I have been privileged to work on a range of the Academy’s projects and programmes and am consistently inspired by the insights, contribution, commitment and impact of the Fellows and the staff.

Engineering underpins our daily lives and will play a critical role in addressing global challenges. I look forward to supporting the Academy in its goal to harness the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and an inclusive economy.

Steve is an internationally renowned civil engineering expert who combines his leadership roles with high levels of direct engagement in technically complex and major projects. Since 2013, as Chair of CEN/TC 250, he has led the evolution of the Structural Eurocodes, the design standards used by over half a million engineers across Europe and in many other countries around the world. 

Steve was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2014 and is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath. He is a Director at WSP and has been with the business for over 30 years.

WSP’s UK Director of Government Relations & Corporate Responsibility, Rachel Skinner, has been a RAEng Fellow since 2019 and Dr Nike Folayan, Technical Director within the firm’s Rail Stations team, was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in 2022.

I’m delighted that Steve has been elected Vice President of the Academy and I warmly congratulate him on this important appointment. The values and purpose of WSP and RAEng align perfectly through our joint focus on skills, innovation and collaboration, making clear the vital role that engineering plays in society by increasing prosperity within our communities. All at WSP look forward to seeing the many successes Steve will achieve during his term.
