Leading multi-disciplinary professional services consultancy WSP has completed a feasibility study for Ionic Technologies, for the design of a commercial scale production facility for magnet rare earth oxides (REOs) via permanent magnet recycling.
Rare earths are critical to the Net Zero energy transition; they are an essential component of our wind turbine generators, and the permanent magnet motors of our electric vehicles. While abundant, these materials are difficult to extract and process and as the energy transition continues, demand is increasing.
China contributes significantly to global refined REO output, accounting for 87% of production, while its downstream capabilities account for nearly 95% of global permanent magnet manufacturing. Ionic Technologies is creating a more sustainable future by extracting and recycling secure, sustainable, and traceable rare earth oxides from end-of-life magnets. This approach supports the development of a diversified and resilient value-addition supply chain.
Project Ionic Rare Earth Recycling encompasses the design and construction of a new magnet recycling plant on an existing brownfield site on Queens Road, Belfast. WSP’s concept design provides a more refined cost estimate and incorporates design improvements while prioritising operational health and safety.
The concept design incorporates multiple services across WSP’s disciplines, including design management, process engineering, mechanical and electrical, architectural, and civil and structural engineering. WSP also provided environmental consultancy support to Ionic Technologies to ensure environmental impact is considered at all stages.
Andrew Woodward, Head of Industry at WSP, said: “We are delighted to be working with Ionic Technologies on this innovative magnet rare earths scale-up project. Rare earths are critical to the future of the Net Zero energy transition, and this milestone reflects our shared commitment to designing for a sustainable future and achieving net zero together.”
Tim Harrison, Managing Director, IonicRE, commented on the study: “The completion of this Feasibility Study is a significant milestone in our Company’s development of a Western rare earths supply chain, initially centred on Belfast, UK and I congratulate Ionic Technologies and our partners for these outstanding results.
“Significantly, the study confirms that the commercial case for magnet recycling is compelling, complementing the clear environmental and sustainability benefits, as well as the growing requirement for REE production outside of China.”
